No Weighbridge Is Coming for You

Weighing is mandatory above 3,500 kg GVW. Almost every private car, saloon, small SUV and light pickup sits below that line — so in practice no weighbridge will ever weigh your car.

It's essential not to draw the wrong conclusion. Unenforced is not unlimited. Your vehicle has:

  • a manufacturer's GVW and therefore a payload, calculated exactly as in The Three Weights;
  • tyres with a load index that doesn't care whether anyone checked;
  • brakes sized for the design weight, which behave exactly as the physics lesson described when you exceed it.

Every mechanism in this module operates on your car. What's absent is only the enforcement that would catch you.

So the conclusion is uncomfortable and simple: you are the weighbridge. For a private vehicle there is no external check between an overloaded car and a crash — no scale, no inspector, no report. The only thing standing there is whether the driver did the arithmetic. That's the module's whole argument, delivered to the person who most needs it and is least likely to have been told.

Key takeaways

  • Private vehicles sit under the 3,500 kg threshold, so no weighbridge will ever weigh yours — but GVW, payload, the tyres' load index and the brakes' design weight all still apply
  • You are the weighbridge: with no external check between an overloaded car and a crash, the arithmetic either gets done by you or not at all
