The 30 km/h Zone: A Survival Threshold
The most important number in this lesson, and the one drivers grumble about most.
Global road-safety research is unambiguous about impact speed and pedestrian survival. Struck at around 30 km/h, the overwhelming majority of pedestrians survive. At around 50 km/h, the odds approach a coin toss. At 80 km/h and above, a pedestrian strike is almost always fatal. The curve between 30 and 50 is brutally steep — those 20 km/h are, quite literally, most of the difference between an injury and a funeral.
Now add the two-stage stopping model. At 30 km/h your total stop is about 18 m. At 50 it's about 34 m — and at 50, the first 21 m of that is reaction distance, which means a child stepping out 20 meters ahead is struck at essentially undiminished speed, before your brakes have even engaged. At 30, the same child at the same distance is struck — if at all — at the tail end of the braking phase, at a speed the survival curve smiles on.
That is the entire logic of the 30 zone: it's set at the speed where both things are true at once — you can usually stop within a school-frontage surprise, and when you can't, the impact lands on the survivable part of the curve. School zones and village trading centers are precisely where the least predictable pedestrians — children — meet the road at the highest density. The zone isn't slowing you down for its own sake; it's pre-deciding the physics of the worst possible moment, in your favour.
