The Progression Gates

The upper categories aren't just separate — they're sequenced. To move up to Category C or D you must typically be at least 24 years old with a minimum of 4 years' experience on a Class B licence (C1 opens earlier, at 22).

The logic connects straight to Module 4 and the hierarchy of responsibility (Lesson 1.5): the vehicles in C and D carry the most kinetic energy, the most passengers, and the harshest consequences for error — so the licence system prices experience into access. A lorry is not a big car; the licensing structure is the law agreeing with the physics.

Key takeaways

  • Upper categories are sequenced, not just separate — C/D require age and experience minimums built on a B licence
  • The gate is the law agreeing with the physics: more mass, more passengers, more consequence, so experience is priced into access
