Vehicle Categories & What They Permit
Vehicle knowledge starts with a legal question, not a mechanical one: what are you actually allowed to drive? Since 2023, Kenya licenses by category — one competence at a time, each with its own training, test, and, in the upper tiers, its own age and experience gates. The old all-in-one "BCE" licence is gone. This lesson gives you the full A–G structure, the boundaries exam questions turn on (passenger count and vehicle weight), the gates that sequence the commercial categories, and the one practical test that settles "can I legally drive that?"
- 1. The Category Structure: One Category, One CompetenceState the A–G category structure and what each category permits, and recognise the passenger/weight boundaries that separate them.
- 2. The Progression GatesExplain why the commercial and PSV categories are sequenced behind age and experience gates, connecting the gate to harm potential.
- 3. "Can I Drive That?": GVW + Passengers + UseApply the three-part match — GVW, passenger count, and use — to decide whether a vehicle is within your category.
