Training the Skill
Hazard perception is a skill, not a fact, and like any skill it improves with deliberate practice and fades without it. Nobody is born reading a matatu stage or a herder at dusk; experienced drivers learned it, mostly by accident, over years. This lesson is about learning it on purpose and faster: a technique that makes your thinking visible, a way to practise on every journey, and the one idea the whole module rests on.
In this lesson you'll learn
- How to use commentary driving to make your hazard perception visible and trainable
- How to practise hazard perception on every journey, including as a passenger
- What the whole module comes down to
- 1. Commentary DrivingUse a spoken see / predict / plan commentary to practise and check your hazard perception.
- 2. Building It into Every DrivePractise hazard perception deliberately (as a passenger, on familiar routes and for the theory paper) using deep learning rather than memorisation.
- 3. The Trained EyeState the principle that connects hazard perception to every other module: early seeing is what gives every other safety skill time to work.
